Confession Wednesday

warning: not for the faint of heart

Confession is still alive and well…it just looks/sounds a little different.

If you live in Arizona listen to 104.7 on Wednesday morning…The morning show has a segment called ‘Confession Wednesday’….let me know what you think.

Confession Wednesday is fascinating at first but as you continue to listen you notice various things - such as guilt, unhappiness, the missing something. That morning show actually hightened my fear of being cheated on or lied to by the people I love. How depressing is that? It made me suspicious of the people that I value the most. I choose not to listen to 104.7 in the morning anymore for that exact reason. The world has enough issues, why should I create new ones?

Dear Anonymous,

Think of how Priests must feel.

And also, Confession Wednesday makes me wonder if your feelings about what you heard on 104.7 gives reason to why we as Christians don’t confess our sins to anyone but God.

You are not alone. I feel much the same as you do my Anonymous friend.

But I guess what I am wondering is what are we (all Christians, not just you and I) supposed to do with “therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” –James 5:16

That verse makes me feel uncomfortable. What is interesting to me is that as I think about what the implications would be if I were to live this verse out with other Christians, is that it stirs in me much of the same words you used to describe Confession Wednesday.

I personally just don't think that I am ready to start confessing to other people my sins...and what got me was how open the people were on 104.7.

Kyle,
The idea of confession is good as long as it is to the right people. I do tell my best friend things that I don't tell anyone else; things that I am not proud of. The concept of Confession Wednesday is that these people are bragging about what they have done and gotten away with. Not that they feel bad or want to do something about it. They want to win something on the radio. I think that it is important to have people that you "confess" to. It doesn't have to be one person for all areas though. I have one friend that I can confess my spending issues and relationship issues. I have another friend that I tell other struggles. It feels better just knowing that someone else knows. I recommend finding someone to confess at least one arena of your life to; they don't have to know that you are confessing. They can just think that you are talking with them.

"Whenever you find a man who says he doesn't believe in a real Right and Wrong, you will find the same man going back on this a moment later." -C.S. Lewis.

The problem in our pop-cluture today is that the definition of "sin" is reduced down to nothing more than "you did something bad." There needs to be a redefining of the word. The young people calling in don't get the extremeness of their "sin" so confessing on air is nothing more than waiting for some glorification for their guilt and maybe getting it off their chest.

But even so, they are confessing to hundreds of listeners. Listeners who don't care about them. So even though a sin was confessed does it mean anything unless to was confessed first to God?

Confessing to eachother I believe keeps us strong in our faith and accountable. And prayer is a powerful tool we can use to ward off the enemy. But again if we do not confess to God (who knows already) has it truly been confessed? Maybe confessed but not forgiven? And if you are confessing without the need or desire for forgiveness then what is the point?

How glorious is a confession of a truly wounded, and sorrowful heart when God gives peace. I can't help but wonder if this station is doing a good thing for lost souls who mean what they say and are searching for something more, or proving that in this day and age people just don't have anyone that will listen to them, at least for free!
